On 24 April 2018 the Society hosted a talk on the Clan O'Donnelly of Tyrone. The talk had one of the highest attendances of any presentation held at Killymaddy which was probably not surprsing given the longevity of the name Donnelly within the area. The Clan O'Donnelly (Ó Donnghaile) is a sub clan of the great O'Neills of Tyrone and former High Kings of Ireland. They shared their roots with the O'Neills in Co Donegal before migrating into Tyrone from around the 8th Century. Whilst there is much recorded of Clan O'Neill particularly around the life of Hugh, Earl of Tyrone, much less is understood of the Donnellys. At the very least this talk and the research on which it is founded hopes to expand our knowledge of this ancient and important Gaelic family and its history. There are many surprises to be found within the Clan's history.
