Description

This talk will be about crannogs, other architecture and Gaelic culture in the period AD1250 onwards.  It has often been assumed that crannogs date from the period AD500-1200, but the talk will demonstrate how they were integral to Gaelic identity right up until the Plantation, so much so that they were targeted for physical destruction and textual denigration by incoming officials and writers.

Finally the talk will show that our present view of crannogs is shaped more by these incoming views than by the Gaelic culture that created them. This has led to us forgetting the true role and importance of many such sites to Gaelic culture.
